Another Storybook Portrait

Here's another gouache portrait, a gift for my niece, done in a style meant to evoke American picture books of the late 60s and early 70s.

Found At Sea – And On TV

Here's another aquatic-themed illustration, this one can be seen in this week's Portland Mercury, accompanying William Steven Humphrey's always-funny I Love Television column.

Lost At Sea Dept. – Ferry Division

Here's an illustration that was intended for this week's Seattle Weekly, but was bumped due to space limitations. Interestingly, the last time this happened, the drawing also had a maritime theme.

Rocket Bike To The Rescue!

Here's a small detail from the cover of a special summertime issue of Minneapolis's City Pages, which I drew back in the late 1980s.

Something About A Sex Machine

Here's a small detail from a ink wash painting I created a couple of years ago, one in a series that illustrated popular songs. This one was inspired by Isaac Hayes's theme to the 1971 movie, Shaft.

Wild and Cartoony

Here's a detail from a poster I created back in 1997, for a show of cartoon-themed art I co-produced with Roq La Rue's Kirsten Anderson, held at Seattle's famous Crocodile Cafe, featuring a performance by cartoon nerd supergroup, the Action Suits. The poster featured an early experiment with what would eventually become my Cartoon Jumbles series of cartoon character conglomerations. Turn your computer upside down and see if you can't discern which popular characters went into the show's tree-swinging icon.

“Kid Bits”, An Unfinished Work

Here's a detail from the inked underdrawing to a painting I started a few years ago, but have yet to finish. If I do get around to finishing it, I'll post the result.

Putting The Not In Whotnot

Here's the mock-up for my original proposal of a comic that would eventually become two separate books, Whotnot! #1, published by Fantagraphics in 1993, and A World of Trouble #1, published by Black Eye Press in 1995.

Los Lobos, Los Firma

Here's an illustration I did for a music festival in upstate New York, back in 2004. I created numerous such drawings for the festival program. The art director was thoughtful enough to have each of the performers sign a copy of my portrayal of their performance. This one features Los Lobos.

Rest In Peace, Dolly Tamarello

Here's another of my sculpted portraits of the victims of an imaginary accident at an imaginary bubble gum factory.

I sat down recently, with two hours to kill, and ended up with this little bit of murder.

Leave Our Fair Nation

Here's another of my absurd short story covers from the early 80s. This one begins: And so it was, that every day, while the other four old gentlemen made copies of their wallets and hands in the post office lobby, ex-tax collector and grey-whiskered troublemaker, Frank Middlesex, sat and watched for cars.

Here's one of my illustrations appearing in this week's Seattle Weekly.
